Prepare to immerse yourself in nature when you visit Catherine’s studio. She has only to look to her own backyard for inspiration, as her paintings express the strength and depth of the surrounding forests and wetlands. She is especially inspired by the intensity and rich variation of Muskoka-Algonquin’s autumn colour, which has captivated painters for generations.
Catherine paints in the Renaissance medium of egg tempera (pigment mixed with raw egg yolk), employing it in an unconventional way. First, using a plaster-like material she applies a textured surface to her board, creating a three-dimensional under-drawing. Over this she paints with egg tempera in layers of rich, luminous colour. Egg tempera is a medium with a broad range of opacity and transparency, and together with the textured base creates images which bridge impressionism and realism.
